DID YOU KNOW? — Individual Taxpayer Identification Number

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a number that is used when a foreign national family member is not eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN) but is required to have a US taxpayer identification number. This number is issued by the IRS. The ITIN permits continued medical eligibility in the Military Treatment Facilities.

A Temporary Identification Number (TIN) is a number that is generated and assigned by the DEERS database for categories of beneficiaries who are awaiting a SSN (e.g. newborns and foreign spouses) or do not have a SSN.

Note: A TIN cannot be used to add a record from a RAPIDS application to the DEERS database for those who misplace or fail to provide SSN documentation.
